Your first appointment

What to expect when you come for the first time

If acupuncture is new to you, it's natural to wonder what happens. Here's a step-by-step guide to your first visit, so you can arrive feeling relaxed and prepared.

Before you come

Once you've booked, you'll receive a short online questionnaire to fill in before you arrive. It gives me time to read about you beforehand, so we can make the most of your appointment.

  • Wear or bring loose clothing, such as shorts and a t-shirt.
  • Have a light meal or snack beforehand.
  • On the day, try not to brush your tongue or have food and drink that stains it, such as coffee or beetroot. Looking at the tongue is a normal part of a Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation.

We start with a chat

Your first appointment takes a little over an hour. We'll talk through what's brought you in, your health history and what you'd like to get from treatment, using your questionnaire as a starting point.

We decide together

I'll explain the approach I'd recommend and answer any questions. We only go ahead once you understand the plan and you're happy with it.

Your treatment

The needles are sterile, single-use and very fine. You might feel a small prick, a gentle tingling, a dull ache or heaviness, and some people feel very little at all. Once the needles are in place, you simply rest. Many people find this the most relaxing part of their week.

Your comfort comes first

Your comfort and consent matter throughout. I'll explain what I'm doing as I go, check in with you, and adjust anything whenever you'd like.

Afterwards

Everyone responds a little differently. You might feel relaxed, a little tired or much the same as usual, so give yourself some breathing room afterwards if you can. We'll talk about how you found the session and what might suit you next.
